Portuguese Cup 2024 Semi-Finals
The Semi-Finals of the Portuguese Cup will soon get underway, and like most seasons, the last four looks set to be dominated by Portugal’s biggest clubs.
Sporting Lisbon and Benfica will collide in one semi and Porto will reach the other against Vitória de Guimarães if they can overcome Santa Clara.
Participating Teams
Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, and Vitória de Guimarães are already in the semis and barring a huge upset, they should be joined by Porto.
In the last ten years, the trophy has been lifted by one of Portugal’s big three with Braga and Desportivo das Aves also collecting the big prize.
Despite the presence of Vitória de Guimarães, Porto, Benfica, and Sporting will all be confident that they can win the tournament.
Key Matchups
Benfica and Sporting is alwats a bug fixture and with the pair competing for local supremacy as well as the trophy, this fixture, with so much at stake, is likely to be a tight affair with no teams taking any risks.
Porto will be very confident of going through the quarters and semis and if they play their usual attacking game, they’ll be hard to stop from reaching the final. Vitória de Guimarães are huge underdogs, but can they go one step further after reaching the semi-finals?
Road to the Semi-Finals
Benfica reached this stage with wins over Lusitânia Açores, FC Famalicão, Braga, and Vizela.
Sporting defeated CD Olivais e Moscavide, Dumiense, Tondela, and União de Leiria.
Vitória de Guimarães got past L.G.C. Moncarapachense, Länk FC Vilaverdense, Penafiel, and Gil Vicente.
The fourth semi-finalist is still unconfirmed.
Player Focus
A number of star players will be on display in the semis as some of Portugals brightest stars will look to light up the tournament.
Benfica will be reliant on the brilliant Joao Neves while Sporting will be hoping that the goals of Viktor Gyökeres can see them through.
Porto have a number of class acts in their team but it’ll likely fall on Galeno to help them progress.
Predictions and Expectations
It’s very difficult to look past Porto reaching the final as the draw has been favourable to them. Who will meet them in the showcase game is a big question.
Benfica and Sporting are huge rivals, and their semi can go either way. The winner against Porto in the final is set to be a huge game.
